My soapbox

Last week I was up at 3am feeding my baby, so what better time to check facebook. I came across a post from a guy that I don't know, I think we are relatives somehow. Anyway this is what he posted: "Why is it that women think it is okay to breastfeed in public? Especially in a restaurant!!!!!!! Either go in the bathroom or go out to your freaking car!!!"
I wanted so badly to comment on his post. Since we don't know each other I thought that would be a little strange. I am not one who likes to breastfeed in public, but I don't believe in anyway is it wrong, discusting or taboo. If I had to though, I totally would, with no second thoughts. Nursing is the most natural thing in the world, it is what our BREASTS were intended for. Anyway I don't know a man alive who would turn their head if they happened to see a boob.
Some of the comments that he got really ripped into him, and some agreed. Mostly the people who were for it were women, which makes sense, but there were some men. This guy doesn't have any children, so it would be interesting to see what happens when they are out to eat and they have their first child with them and his wife says the baby is hungry. Is he going to make her go out into the car for a half hour, or into the bathroom while he gets to finish his meal. I don't think so. Why do people feel that going into the bathroom to eat is a good idea. Would you want to do that. I don't think it is a good idea for my baby to do that. Anyway this topic really got to me, and I just needed to get on my soapbox for a little bit. I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.

Well, here's my two cents. I don't nurse, but I agree you have to feed your baby when they are hungry. But I also think being tactful about it is nice. I remember a long time ago when I was a waitress in a nice restaurant in Scottsdale this lady at one of my tables just lifted up her shirt and started feeding her baby. She in no way tried to cover up or be discreet. I was kind of caught off guard just with the fact that there were lots of people around and I wondered what the reaction would be and I was kind of embarrassed. I don’t know why. There was only one other time when Jeff was with me at a wedding reception and same thing happened. He felt awkward sitting there not wanting to look at her boobs. Anyways. Those were the only two times in my life where I felt weird about it. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think you need to show the world everything when your baby needs to eat. You can pull your shirt down or put a blanket over you. You know. Is that weird to think people should be a little more private? Other than those 2 times, I’m fine when people nurse in public. It has to be done. I guess I'll stick to my bottles. :)

Heather I totally agree you need to be discreet. I should have put that in my little rant.

Amen Lisa!! I have no problems feeding in public but definitely cover up. I wouldn't just whip out the boob right there for everyone to see...that I don't like. It drives me nuts that people think it's wrong to do it in public if I'm covered up...what is it hurting you?

And agreed, going to the bathroom...GROSS! Would you eat yourself in a public bathroom? I'm excited to see you tomorrow!

Here's my thought on this topic. For one, whoever it was that said that clearly doesn't have kids because he has no clue and really shouldn't be spouting things off......very annoying! Second, I have no problem with people breastfeeding in public as long as they are covered. Before I had kids, I thought it was a little weird, but after having a baby, you realize you have no other choice. You are not going to lock yourself up and never go out in public for a year. You have to enjoy life and still do the things you did before you had a baby, otherwise you will go nuts!! I am with you on this one, it is totally natural to breastfeed and anyone who doesn't like it can just look the other way :)
